ScarWork™
ScarWork™
Though scar tissue plays an important role in the process of healing, it leaves behind changes that sometimes effect mobility, sensation, and appearance.
ScarWork is a gentle and effective manual therapy approach that addresses symptomatic scarring by using a light touch to soften and re-organize the tissue.
What to expect
Upon arrival, your practitioner will ask about how you acquired your scar, as well as any symptoms you may be experiencing. Together you will both feel the scar before, during and after the session to get a sense of change. Applied techniques may vary (depending on the type of scar, surgical procedure, age of the scar, and location on the body) and the treatment should always be comfortable and even relaxing.
Integrating scar tissue back into the body can provide freedom - and sometimes it's freedom you didn't even know you were missing.
The amount of change in one intervention can be extensive, followed by a short period of rapid healing and continued improvement over the next few weeks.
*Please note, we prefer that your scar be at least 12-weeks old and completely healed. (Exceptions can be made for certain cases, but please consult with us first).
*We do not treat keloids, as these scars have different properties and don't respond as well.
Benefits
ScarWork results in textural changes that seem to translate into functional ones, and the results appear to be permanent. Most commonly clients report increased circulation, improved mobility, decreased swelling, and reduced pain, sensitivity and numbness.
This change in texture also helps restore a more natural appearance. Smoothing out the lumps, holes, and strings in the tissue can contribute towards making the scar less noticeable.
Beyond physical relief, energetic release is also possible. Scars often carry memories of past trauma or injury, and this work can help liberate stored emotional tension and support emotional healing.
Additional information
ScarWork is a trademarked approach that originated with Sharon Wheeler in the early 1970s after she trained with Dr. Ida Rolf, the founder of Structural Integration. Sharon's unique discoveries are now being researched as she continues to develop the work and teach worldwide.
