Structural Integration is a systematic approach to reshaping the body's posture and movement through manipulation of the fascial network, the connective tissue web that surrounds every muscle, bone, organ, and nerve in the body. Developed by Dr. Ida Rolf in the mid-twentieth century, the Rolf Method works on the principle that the body functions best when its segments are properly aligned with gravity. When they are not, chronic pain, restricted movement, and compensatory patterns follow.
At Align, our Structural Integration practitioner is Jeannie Kelley, a certified advanced Rolf practitioner whose journey in the healing arts began in 1986. Formerly operating as Island Soma Therapy in Hilton Head, Jeannie brings decades of experience and deep expertise to each session.
What to Expect
Each session begins with a standing postural assessment. Jeannie will observe how your body is organized in space, noting areas of compression, rotation, or imbalance, and use this as a map for the session's work. Clients are asked to wear undergarments or comfortable fitted clothing during the assessment and work portions of the session.
The hands-on table work uses sustained, specific pressure to soften and reposition fascial restrictions. Unlike Swedish massage, the strokes are slow and targeted, often held at the edge of a stretch to allow the tissue to release gradually. Sessions typically run longer than a standard massage, averaging 75 minutes, to allow thorough work across the areas addressed.
Throughout the session, you may be asked to make small movements, such as a breath or a subtle shift of the leg, that help integrate the changes being made in the tissue. This active participation is part of what makes Structural Integration uniquely effective for lasting postural change.
The Ten-Series Approach
While individual sessions offer real benefit, Structural Integration is traditionally delivered as a ten-session series, with each session building on the last to systematically address the entire body. The series is organized as follows:
- Sessions 1–3 (Sleeve sessions): Establish breathing, open the outer layers of fascia, and create more space throughout the body
- Sessions 4–7 (Core sessions): Address the deeper structures, including the spine, hips, psoas, and inner leg lines that support the core
- Sessions 8–10 (Integration sessions): Connect and harmonize all the work completed, establishing a new, more efficient pattern of movement and posture
Clients who complete the full ten-series often describe it as transformative: not just in how they feel, but in how they move, stand, and inhabit their bodies day to day.
Benefits
- Resolves chronic postural pain that has not responded to other treatments
- Restores ease and efficiency of movement through systematic fascial release
- Improves breathing mechanics by releasing restrictions in the ribcage and diaphragm
- Addresses the root cause of pain rather than managing symptoms
- Long-lasting results: structural changes made to the fascial network are durable
